Do XP and Windows 7 play well with others?

I don't care for the Windows 7 layout, and I'm fed up with having to learn a new OS every couple of years. When my current machine finally gives up the ghost -- any day now -- I'm thinking about switching to Mac OSX or a freeware product.

The issue is the other systems I work with. My office runs XP Pro SP3, and will probably do so until the accounting program we use stops making compatible software. Most of the clients' computers I would need to work with run Windows 7.

Anyone out there have experience going back and forth between Windows and another OS? How hard is it to make files accessible to both? Thanks.

Update:

I should clarify- I'm not worried about the original switch, it's day-to-day usage. I need to access the same files as the XP- and 7-users, and they need to access them again when I'm done. I'd prefer without needing to do anything special, or at least that any extra steps could all be done on my end, as some of our clients aren't too comfortable with computers.

Your personal files will not be touched unless you format your drive, and that will happen only when you dont know how to switch between OS safely. I am not sure about Mac but I know that most modern operating systems, starting from win xp, allow you the option of switching your os without formatting...or booting. You know booting right? when you install your os without logging onto windows. But an experienced person will suit you well in such cases...dont play around with your files. It takes a second to erase them forever. I made the mistake of being over confident and I paid with 40GB of my drive...I get goose bumps when I think about that day.
