Can some explain to me how astrology actually works?

Can some explain to me how astrology actually works? There doesn't seem to any way for it to work without the universe being deterministic. And if the universe is deterministic doesn't that mean that I have no control over my life and I can do what the hell I like.

No science for why astrology can work but plenty for why it can't. See link.

The better question is why anyone WANTS astrology to be real. Given a choice between having freewill or being programed like a robot, which would you want. For me the choice is easy.

There is none. In fact, the astrological charts have no basis in reality anymore, due to precession. You may have head of the "New Zodiac," the 13 (not 12) constellations that the Sun, Moon, and planets travel in. That conforms to the actual path these bodies take in the sky, but, current astrological charts are based on the situation some 2000 years ago or so. However, no-one has figured out the characteristics of these new signs, afaik. I once guessed that it might be gravity that is doing it. E.g., if you look at the moon's effects on water in the tides, and the fact that we are mostly water, maybe there is an effect, as with gravity, everything attracts everything else with the formula: F equals G Mm / d squared. So, I worked it out. It turns out that while the moon does have an effect, a person standing 1m (3') away from you has an equal gravitational affect as the moon. The Sun's affect is so small, it is barely there, and the planets just don't matter at all. So, if there is a scientific reason for it, it certainly isn't gravity, nor anything that any scientist has ever figured out. Scientists do not accept Astrology at all, except as a curiosity.

Astrology started out as a method of observation, and not of supernatural predictions. For example, the Ancient Egyptians used astrology to predict rainfall, famine, and various other seasons of life. Because the universe is mathematically accurate, those observations became known facts (such as the overflowing of the Nile River), and so on.

The Mayans saw a prevailing pattern in the universe, which is why they created the long form Mayan Calendar. To me, the start and end date of that calendar means nothing. The start date is over 4,000 years ago ( i forgot the actual date), and the reason why the Mayans chose that date is because of a certain "strange" planetary pattern that is atypical (or doesn't happen in usual months or years). The end date date of the Mayan calendar, meanwhile, is when that planetary pattern will occur AGAIN...and that will happen on December 2012. Is it mathematically correct? Yes. The Mayans calculated it. Does it mean that the destiny of individuals will be affected by the position of planets? Not really.

You see, the ancients are able to predict when the planets will come together, and so forth. Somehow, astrologers tied those planetary positions and patterns to notable world events that occurred while specific planetary positions are in place. And that's the very core of astrology.

And by the way, I do believe that destiny is a product of free will. ;)

Experts in numerology use the numbers to determine the best time for major moves and activities in life. Numerology is used to decide when to invest, when to marry, when to travel, when to change jobs, or relocate. Numerology is an occult science and for me it's fascinating. It is perhaps the easiest of the occult arts to understand and use. All you need is the birth date and the complete name of an individual to unlock all of the secrets that the numbers hold.

The science of astrology is based on the universal constant that regardless of what happens, people are retarded. Regardless of what your astrologist says it will be both true, false, and irrelevant in equal measures. Due to the universal constant of retardation (known as the Bush constant) people pick out the bits they want to hear and believe them to be true because thats the easy thing to do.

Heres your horroscope for tomorrow: You will wake up tired in the morning, you will face certain challenges, you will make a decision or two, you will wish you had something that you dont have like a new tv or hotter friends or something.

    Spookily accurate isnt it!?

No, trust me, you're gonna be waiting a long time trying to get the answer to this. I've tried to find this out myself and no one can quite say which is pretty upsetting. The way to persuade is to first explain. If you wanna sell someone something, at least have concrete information that they can reference.I'd prefer for someone to tell me, astrology works because of....or we don't know WHY this works, we just know that it does as opposed to not having anything said about it.

First of all, when you refer to free will and control, you're talking more about predictive astrology which is the focus of vedic astrologers. Tropical or western astrology doesn't focus on predicting SPECIFIC future events - like when you're going to marry or die or how many children you'll have. You still have free will. And with Western astrology, the focus is primarily upon the effects of the Sun, Moon, and planets within our solar system - those things that are near enough to us to affect us. Sidereal astrology will look at the actual constellations named after the zodiac signs - Western astrology uses the sign names but does not look at the sign constellations.

As for how it works, you need to understand that astrology is not about something that magically happens when a person is born. It is a process that culminates upon birth. "We are born at a given moment in a given place and like vintage years of wine we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born. Astrology does not lay claim to anything else." That statement was made by Carl Jung, the founder of analytical psychology, who studied astrology in relation to the mind and human behavior. “Astrology occupies a unique and special position among the intuitive methods... I have observed many cases where a well-defined psychological phase, or an analogous event, was accompanied by a transit (particularly when Saturn and Uranus were affected).” There are many astrologers today who continue using astrology with psychology - these are the astropsychologists.

The ancient astrologers may not have understood the scientific reasons behind their observations; those scientific theories had not yet been discovered. Today, science is beginning to provide validation. Consider this - Lunar cycles are now known to affect animal behavior and physiology such as laboratory rats' taste sensitivity and the ultrastructure of pineal gland cells. Scients believe that these things may be triggered by the electromagnetic radiation and/or the gravitational pull of the moon. We already know that the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun affects the ocean's tides (more accurately the rise and fall of the ocean). It’s also a scientific fact that when aligned with the moon a certain way, the sun will strengthen or weaken the moon's pull, creating an effect on tides. This is the same principle as aspects and alignments in astrology. There are people who still plant crops based on the cycles of the Sun and Moon because they affect the amount of moisture pulled up to the surface of the earth. Why wouldn't such forces also affect the development of a person who spends the first 9 months of their life in the watery environment of the womb - the development of his brain and therefore his personality? Babies are not born as blank slates; they are not born all alike. They have different personalities - some are demanding, some are quiet and observant.

Recently, a study by the Office of National Statistics in the UK found that the birth month of a child apparently affects the kind of career that they follow. See http://topnews.ae/content/28945-birth-mo%E2%80%A6 the link doesn't work, just Google Birth Month Determines Baby’s Career or something similar and it will show up. A neuroscientist from Oxford, although he won’t admit to believing in astrology stated: “It seems absurd the month in which you are born can affect life chances, BUT how long you live, how tall you are, how well you do at school, your body mass index as an adult, your morning-versus-evening preference and how likely you are to develop a range of diseases are all correlated to some extent with the time of year in which you emerge from the womb.” Some researchers have suggested that the differences might be linked to a mother’s exposure to sunlight during pregnancy. Sunlight triggers the production of Vitamin D in the body and lack of this in the first months of life may have long-lasting effects. So, the Sun’s energy in fact affects the unborn child.

As I said, the astrologers of ancient civilizations, most of whom were also astronomers, may not have known about the scientific principles behind gravity or solar and lunar cycles or solar flares or planetary energies or Vitamin D, but they saw the patterns and the effects of such things here on earth. Now, scientists are beginning to recognize those patterns and effects as well and, I think, will continue to do so.

Astrology is a tool - it helps you to better understand yourself and others, to identify strengths and weaknesses and the reasons why you might behave a certain way in certain situations - sometimes in ways that stand in the way of your own success. It can even help to identify high and low energy periods. But your future - as far as I'm concerned, still depends on the choices that YOU make.
