One point is all you need.

Roosevelt introduced a socialist program to get the economy to recover by providing work for the disenfranchised masses.

His opponents that had been telling everyone socialism was evil did not want Roosevelt to prove that a social program would work.

In the event his program got America working again and so his opponents spent the next generation re-writting history to try to say that his plan failed.

Now the right wing will try to pretend that his program caused the recession, just like they are now ignoring the architect of the crisis; Bush, whilst blaming Obama for a problem he did not create.

It is interesting the the US is now on the road to recovery thanks to Obama, whilst in Europe where they are not following Obama's lead, the crisis is deepening with cuts in public spending starving the economy and stopping the recovery.
