ATM's in China- can I access my Australian account?

Usually when I travel I just use my Australian card in local ATM's.

Does China have this facility, i.e. accessing foreign bank accounts through ATM's.

No problem - I do it all the time. Most of the banks work ......but if you find a small one that doesnt , just go to another nearby.

Often there may be 3 "ATMS " side by side.....make sure you use the one marked "ATM"...the others run on different local account

There is no black market for money in China but you will sometimes find people outside banks offering you fantastic exchange rates. Dont try it - you will be cheated - its often used to launder counterfeit money.

Dont ever hand over money unless it to pay - there is a common scam , usually with RMB 100 bills , where you give your bill to a shop or taxi etc.....then say they dont have change & give you a counterfeit bill back. Always carry all the common bills so you dont get caught

Years ago I had problems regardless of the size of the bank, (Example in 2005: Bank of China: my American ATM card did not work here in Mainland China but worked fine in H.K.) Things have changed. Yes, stick to the big three but don't be afraid to try the smaller banks. You should be fine.

Call the bank before your trip. There is a lot of fraud in Asia and if they do not know you are there they may block the transaction.

Otherwise I have used the ATM in many countries in Asia and China.

You can use your ATM cards in China. 100%. Small fee. Just make sure you notify your bank you will be using your cards in China.
