Little girl Mini-Schnauzer?

Is scared to death when it rains. It's not so much the thunder, but the sound of rain on the roof. She shakes so hard she starts panting. I try to hold her and love her but she just wants down, prowls around, and will hide under a table or desk.

Any thoughts to calm her down?

Update:

Maybe the use of little girl was misleading, although she is my little girl. She is seven years old. Rain has always frightened her and all we've tried to do is comfort her. We've never acted any differently. She loves to be in my lap and does so at every opportunity. Except when it's raining hard. At these times she just roams around the house and shakes. She will come when called, and we can pick her up. But she gets antsy and wants down.

2 choices: let the dog get accustomed to the sound without doing anything; or, get an anxiety wrap which is an elasticized "shirt" for the pup's mid-section.

Also, don't over-dramatize your dog's fears. Often, dogs play off their owner's emotions; the more theatrical the owners become, the more excitement the dog feels..
