Safe handling of regumate?

My mare is going onto regumate for 10 days (she's going to stud and this is at the recommendation of the stud and my vet). I'm a little nervous about handling it due to the warnings on the information leaflet etc - I have read elsewhere online that latex gloves don't prevent it getting on your skin. I normally use nitrile gloves - are they ok to use?

Any advice on safe handling of this stuff? I have the correct syringe for drawing it out the bottle etc.

Thanks

Double glove it if you're very concerned.

As an equine vet tech who's handled this countless times, I can say that the worries about this drug are exaggerated. Yes, granted, if one spills a bottle on their hand and won't wash it off for hours, you're going to see an interruption in your cycle. But be smart about it, glove up before you touch the bottle, and remove and discard gloves as soon as you're done.

Do whatever you can to not come in contact with it. I do understand this isnt always possible. But always wear gloves and dont touch anything else unless you have new gloves or can clean it off as you can come into contact with it this way. Just remember that it is easily absored through your skin and even clothes but i am sure you have already read this!

We use nitrile gloves or just use two pairs of latex gloves.

Have you asked the vet or stud about the use of Altrenagest (not sure on spelling?) its a needle given once a week and has the same affect. It really comes down to what it is being used for exactly, in my experiance it has been given to any mare that has issues with keeping pregnancies or getting in foal. So the needle is fantastic as we dont have to touch the regumate itself!

    Use non-porous gloves.

Also, the stuff is messy. It makes the bottle gross and everything you touch will get gross. It's also very hard on the rubber part of the syringe plunger, so you might need to replace it at some point (it should last for 10 days though.)

It's not going to burn a hole in your skin--if you get it on you, wash as quick and thoroughly as you can.

Just wear latex gloves when handling it. I work with it twice a week at a big barn and it's totally safe with gloves.
