Is it better for me to start with poetry?
I find poetry comes more naturally to me because it gets to the core of my feelings without me having to worry about plot, but I want to capture all these ideas and turn them into a novel. Should I begin with them and build the story around them?
Does anyone have any advice from their own experience?

poetry isnt just feelings. good poetry often has a plot. and can be far more powerful than a novel in many cases due to short attention spans.. plus you cant tell a book from memory so that others may enjoy it. give poetry a chance, its always worth a better look ; )

Poetry is something that resides in your most innermost being. As for myself, I find it as my refuge when times are rough or perhaps when I'm at my utmost happiness. If you feel down deep in your heart that You Want, in need, or has the passion to write, then I don't see any reasons why you should not.
