Is it a good idea to insure a pet rat?

I was wondering if it's a good idea to insure a pet rat or not, because I've paid huge vet bills before for tumors, eye infections, respiratory problems and i was thinking it might be cheaper if i insured them? What do you think and if you live in the UK do you know any good small pet insurers?

Thanks for your time

in all honesty, you're better off putting aside the money you would pay into insurance. that way, when the rat passes, you won't lose that money. you will have it for any future rats. some rats go their whole lives barely needing any treatment, and others need a lot.

put some money aside each month as a vet fund and it will be there when you need it.

there IS a risk that if they need surgery you might not have enough, but you'll have SOME and that's something. the money won't be wasted if the rats turn out to only have the odd sniffle in their lifetime.

Are there any pet insurance companies that insure rats? Realistically, for their life span of two years it probably would cost more in the insurance premiums than you would ever spend in vet fees over your rat's life. You are better off making a separate bank account for vet fees and putting aside a certain amount each month towards possible vet fees. Think of what you would pay in insurance premiums for a dog or cat each month for pet insurance, and you should not have to worry if your rat does need surgery in the future.

you still end up paying the first 50/60/75 quid of any episode of treatment.

    No, not worth it.
