cat dying - end stage renal failure?

My cat is 17 and has been diagnosed with this by the vet. He's lost a huge amount of weight but he still asks for food and eats a little. The vet gave us tablets and renal cat food but he doesn't like it - not his usual stuff! Have given up trying to force tablets down his throat. Vet happy to put him down when I say so but won't come to house to do it - lack of time.

I have chronic stage 3 renal failure myself and am assuming he feels a lot worse than I do? If I could ask him what he wants to do it would be easier. If he eats a bit wanders about sits in the sun, sleeps on my bed, purrs if I pet him doesn't that say he should stay at home with me a bit longer or am I being cruel, is he really suffering, is he in pain?

How long will he go on like this for if we do nothing, is it possible he'll pass away peacefully in his sleep at home? The vet had to take his blood tests from his chest to diagnose either renal failure or diabetes and he was screaming the place down. I don't want to take him back there.

His sister was put down by that vet and she reacted badly to the sedative and cried and pooed herself before he gave her the one to stop her heart. I was in a terrible state after that and can't bear to go through the same thing again with him. It was cruel and not what I'd have wanted to happen.

Has anyone had a cat like this who stayed at home, what was the end like and how long did it take to get to there?

This is how my cat died at age 15 years and of course i had intentions for her to die at home like we all want for our pets, but it never really worked out as her stages caused blindness she became confused and walked into walls and the final thing was she suffered a fit in my arms,i of course rushed her to the vet who told me what i already knew she had to be put to sleep,

and i begged the vet not to hurt her with needles i was a wreck, but of course had no option as my girl would suffer if she wasn't put to sleep that very hour,i can see why your not wanting to take him back there and to be honest i would be now feeling the same way as you about it,my cat stayed happy for about a week before it all happened so fast,

it causes ulcers to form in the mouth and throat so they stop eating, they urinate lots as the body cannot absorb fluids so become dehydrated fast,my cat was fine on a tuesday but was not recognisable by the thursday of the same week it happens so fast at the last stages,

so look out for the final stages,

    yellowing of skin and gums.

    bad breath,

urlcers in mouth and throat making them not want to eat.

skin becomes see through as they lose body fat rapidly.

they become agitated as it causes headaches.

they become weak and walk with a wobble.

drink lots but still want more as soon as its been drank.

    sunken eyes due to dehydration.

i know its scary to see them go through this i have been there and am still upset by it,but be sure to spend time with him cuddling and making so much fuss of him, they do purr even with kidney failure its amazing of how brave they are,my cat seemed so happy right to the very end thats what upset me more as she was brave,i never stayed while they put her to sleep i could not face seeing her have needles but the vet was kind and came to the waiting room after to tell me he had put her in a quiet room while she was injected so no stress,i also chose to give a sweater i had worn for them to wrap her in to bring her some comfort,

sorry that your now facing this but just watch out for any signs that he is stressed, for now he seems happy with you so comfort him as it can happen fast, hope this helps but i know no words can help when this is happeing to our pets but knowing were not alone helps a little,

    bless him.

I would also like to ask the question. My Abigail is 16 and has CRF. She was always quite a rive and feisty. A little over a month ago, my other cat had to be put down, also 16, with multiple problems. Abigail began to act differently, eat and drink less and not eliminate. I took her to the vet who did blood tests. She said if A by didn't get IV fluids at a 24 hour facility right away, she wouldn't make it. I took her that night, after she had collapsed and cried out. They said she needed to make urine within 24 hours, or it was over. She did, and she continued to improve at the hospital where she stayed five days. Looking back, she had been peeing on the carpet a lot but not showing weight loss or any of the other things that are now there. When her renal functions leveled out, I brought her home where she receives Sub Q IV fluids every other day. She is very weak and skinny, and staggers when she walks. She still has a bit of the feistiness about her, especially when it is med time. How do I know when it is the end? She seems so weak, eats little, drinks pretty well, but eliminates very little. After putting the other cat down, I remember having a peace about it because she really looked ready and stayed under the bed all day, eventually not moving much at all. I am not sure that A by is ready because she stays so close, is still loving and happy to see me. I don't want to rush it, but I want to know if I am prolonging the agony for both of us. She is supposed to go back for blood work in about 2 1/2 weeks to 3, and in the meantime, I watch her constantly when I am awake. For a 16 year old, I know she doesn't have long, but what do I look for as the end?

I just wrote a very long thing about my cat, with kidney failure—it's 2014 now, and we can now add to questions that have been answered. Sometimes if I do something different with my mouse arrow, it makes the answer I'm writing disappear. It disappeared. I'll just say a little, now. Today I got the feeling while cuddling with my sick cat that she has a right to decide if she wants to die now and that she doesn't feel ready. It was a spiritual feeling—I felt that I was inside her golden heart. But, sadly, she doesn't have any reliable way to TELL me what she wants, and of course they say that cats don't know they are dying, they just feel horrible. And it was probably not a real "thing!" just me, grieving. But there she was, sick and so warm and purring and purring, so full of love. Wouldn't a being that is full of love want to stay with the love of her humans ? But… it would only be a matter of time. She's close to death anyway. Reading a lot on the internet is a good way to help with the decision. You find out more about how much they are probably suffering, and what painful deaths they sometimes suffer if allowed to stay alive and die naturally. I am a strong believer in euthanasia for people, so I guess I'll just have to be brave, and cry and pray and hope I see her again some day. *I* would want to be allowed to die from a shot that would not hurt than spend months or years in pain. People with NDEs sometimes say they see a very beloved pet on the other side… What a strong bond love is.

    Cat Kidney Failure End Stage

    Hi Joy

I am very sorry you are going through this. Are you sure this is FAILURE and not crf? The reason I ask is cause if this is crf then the treatment would be much different and would not include that horrible diet Are you giving sub-q's? There is new research out there

If you feel your cat is in pain and needs to be put down then why do you need your vet? Your vet should have a number of someone who makes hoise calls for this purpose or you can start picking up the phone or look online for one that will. I have had to do this

Anyway again I am sorry but I appreciate your loyalty and responsibility

Please stop feeding cats dry food. That is the cause in most cases

This is a really tough decision, and I really sympathize. We had a cat in a similar situation, and the best advice I can give is that the cat will know when it's time and give you a sign. Generally, it will be a withdrawal. In the wild, they will go off alone to die. In the case of our cats, they went somewhere private, and showed little or no reaction to any kind of attention.

I can't say whether it would have been better to euthanize earlier, because cats will not let you know how much they hurt (it's a predator thing), but I do believe they can tell you when they think it's time.

It is hard when you have a terminally I'll pet. I have had many cats, dogs, horses and other animals.

The worst thing about them is that they have short lifespans! If your cat is eating, that would be my main criteria. When I am really in pain, I don't want to eat. I think it is the same way with animals.

If he purrs and is obviously enjoying things, he is OK for now.

My neighbor has a cat with kidney problems. She, too, is seventeen. She is skeletal, but happy. She eats well and sleeps a lot. She is about deaf, but still seeks out her owner and rules her roost.

Either find another vet, which may not be possible, or ask your vet to use a smaller diameter needle so it doesn't hurt the cat.

I know this answer is too late for the questioner but i just lived thru this early this morning. I promised that i would not let him suffer but by the time it got to the suffering part it was too late to do anything. From all i had read and had seen during many years as a hospice home care nurse is they go into a coma and quietly die. That was not what happened to Sam. What happened to him is too bad to list here but let it be enough to say he suffered horribly and all i could was hold him tight, talk to him and beg him to please let go and die? It was greatly traumatic for him and for me. I had him from the time he was 8-10 days old and very few times did he not sleep with me. He was my true best friend and i will never forget the horror i caused by thinking i could take care of him at home. It was a short few minutes for him but i will bear this a lifetime.

You do not want to try this at home.
