Is out National Anthem any longer appropriate?

Bradley Wiggins has been criticised for apparently not singing the National Anthem when receiving a medal. It is, however, a hymn, asking God to save our queen. With our society becoming steadily more secular, is it time for a change? I do not wish to be disloyal but, as an atheist, singing the National Anthem would stick in my throat.

Some users on here quaintly think we are talking about America. They havent twigged on it refers to the Queen of Britain. I would always sing. and I am a Royalist.

I don't think it has much to do with being secular. A lot of English people, myself included are not royalists in any way, shape or form.

I believe that in the 21st century there is absolutely no need for a royal family. That's why if I had to sing the national anthem, well I just wouldn't.

I do believe in God, I just think that there is no need to have royal families anywhere in the world anymore, not just Britain.

So I think most people don't sing it because we don't like the royal family. I think this is the main reason.

You're correct too, other people may wish not to sing it because they don't believe in God.

But did you know some people don't even know the words to the anthem. I certainly don't.

Atheist or not the Anthem has more to do with National Pride and coming together as a people. I don't believe in God or any deities and still understand the purpose. They're words, not a commitment to force you to believe a religion.

America and china national anthem give me the chills and Im filipino !. It really depends what type of national anthem you have .

I cant blame you brits for not like God save the Queen . Its such a good sounding anthem BUT it does not suit modern Britain . Are you really dedicating your whole life and future for the queen ?

For me Brutain should change their natinal anthem to 'Jerusalem '

I would think so. Things should change, and he shouldn't be criticised. He could I guess if he did have that religious view. Oh and also, I came to your profile seeing what you said on an old question about unique instruments. Correction: Harmonicas are indeed unique instruments.

If it weren't for sporting events, the national anthem would be obsolete. And everyone finds it annoying to stand up while someone takes their sweet *** time holding every note.

O say can u see by the dawns early lights what so proudly we hear why the starlight left streaming with the rockets in way bought truth to the nights but our flag was still there... I can't remember the rest but hope this helps

Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

How is this asking God to save our queen????
