Windows7 startup problem - how can I rescue my files ?

I have Acer 8935 laptop running Windows 7. I ran CHKDSK and on next startup got "Cannot find file CRYPT32.dll" and Windows startup stops. I have tried to get into SAFE MODE but cannot get that far.

How do I find CRYPT32 or can I get Windows to skip that step.

The computer tells me that there is no rescue partition. Windows 7 was an upgrade from Vista.

I have manufacturers upgrade DVD.

I would like to rescue my personal files before anything more drastic. Can I do this?

Update:

Yes I have subsequently discovered that using the upgrade disk moved my files to windowsold and solved the problem.

This is where Live CDs come in handy.

The best thing that you can do is using another computer to download a free Linux distribution that comes with Live-CD features. I suggest using Ubuntu:

    http://www.ubuntu.com/

After downloading the .ISO image file, burn it to a disc. Now do the following:

1- Put the CD you've just burned in the computer where you're having the startup problem.

2- Now, you should tell your computer to boot from CD (Usually It's by hitting F2 or delete when your computer first starts, which will allow you to access the BIOS configuration screen.) Make sure to locate the 1st Boot Device option, and set it as your CD/DVD disk drive. Make sure to save the new configuration by usually hitting F10 and then Enter.

3- If you've successfully set your computer to boot from your CD/DVD disk drive, the UBUNTU boot screen will appear.

4- Now choose the Live-CD option, and choose the display language.

5- Now Ubuntu will boot. You can easily locate your windows partitions from there on using the File System manager.

For more information on how to burn and then boot using Ubuntu's Live-CD, check the following link:
