Diabetes question please answer?

In my experience, infection and viruses cause high glucose levels. I am in a debate with someone who says that infection can cause hypoglycaemia! Who is right? This other person is advising someone to give their child a bottle of lucozade despite having a bs of 5.5 and a sore throat! She has insulin dependent diabetes herself, is young and thinks she knows everything. I am older but do not claim to know everything, hence the question!

    Hi,

    You are correct.

During illness or infection the body will release extra glucose into your blood stream in a bid to help combat the illness.

In people without diabetes, this is an effective strategy as their pancreas will release extra insulin to cope with the extra blood glucose.

In people with diabetes, the release of glucose presents an unwanted extra difficulty in managing the rise in blood glucose levels - in addition to feeling less than 100%.

This is why blood sugar levels are very difficult to control in times of illness or infection.

Your friend should not be advising the above when the child's blood sugar levels are satisfactory.

When anyone is hypoglycaemic, glucose tablets are preferable as it contains 4g of glucose. With lucozade you may give more than is necessary, which could cause levels to 'dip and rise' affecting diabetic stabilty.

There is a lot of stuff on the internet that is basically fat-shaming diabetics for causing their own diabetes with their bad diet and lack of exercise and general lack of moral fibre. A lot of this stuff is written by non-doctors, often with a supplement or diet or training plan to sell that they claim will completely cure diabetes if only people stick to it.

I read this interesting book https://tr.im/S4PB1 that gave me a lot of useful tips about my disease and also a different perspective on the best therapeutical approach. I think you should read it too.

I do not think that the infection and viruses cause high blood sugar. But if you have high blood sugar, your immunity to infectious illness will be lowered.

As a general rule, diabetic patients should avoid sweet drinks and carbonated drinks.
