Why won't my Gas?

What can I do to fix the following problem. Whenever I set the Gas Central Heating clock timer to under 20c wer have NO heat.

Update:

British Gas Fitter says the reason is; that a sensor wont let the heat on if the rooms are not below the desired temp.

Update 2:

Thank you Grandad. Pressed wrong button for low rate = sorry

Turn the thermostat up slowly towards 25c. When you hear a click, that is the room temperature. We run ours on 21.5c. Thermostats are not that accurate, an indicated 20c could be anywhere between a true 18 and 22c. You can buy a cheap plastic room thermometer for £4, cheaper than a new stat. If you wish to replace the stat consider a programmable model with night set-back. Set it for 16c when you are at work, or asleep and your comfort level when you are home. Take advantage of any free insulation offer you can find.

Maybe the thermostat is shot. They don't last forever.
