Ml4 Golf 1.6 timing marks?

Got a 1.6 8V Golf (SR I believe, so AEH engine code) and can't seem to see what to line the camshaft sprocket timing mark up with. Anyone got an answer please, save me having to go buy a Haynes for such a simple task? The pip on the sprocket is easy enough to see, and the crankshaft marks are easy to see, but not the mark the camshaft sprocket lines up with...

Cheers!

Update:

Actually the AKL engine code, but the problem was the camshaft timing mark was on the piece of plastic cover which bolts on behind the sprocket, and I hadn't put it back on yet! Muppet!

Never did a 1.6, but you should have put the engine on TDC #1 before taking anything apart, just to be sure you did know what all had to be aligned.

On the 1.8, there is also a line on the inside of the sprocket that has to line up with the edge of the valve cover. So the line would be horizontal, parallel to the valve cover.

But you can also just look at a Haynes manual at the public library.

If it is an 8 valve then there is one on the crankshaft pulley that lines up with a mark on the belt cover (each of which you have got to cast off to obtain access to the belt). The other is on the camshaft pulley that traces up with a mark on the piece of plastic cover secured to the cylinder head. It's quite time ingesting to keep hanging the timing belt quilt & crank pulley on & off to assess the marks. Once I alternate them i ignore the marks & before i unencumber the belt anxiety i make my possess marks with a tippex pen. Yeah i know thats dishonest nevertheless it saves time & provided that you mark it properly you wont have any issues
