Why won't my infrared remote work in my fiesta?

i have a mk 4 '98 ford fiesta ghia x and the remote stopped working a few months ago. I took it to a local car electronics specialist and he tried to re-program it with no success. He advised I tried a secondhand remote and sensor which my husband has just bought from his work in a scrap yard. He tried them in the car they came out of and they both worked fine. He has just spent an hour trying to get them to work in my car with no success.

Can anyone give me some sensible suggestions as to what else could be going wrong with it?

He has tried the re-program sequence recommended by ford so what else is there?

Thankyou.

Update:

The first thing I did when it first stopped working was change the batteries. then when that didn't work I thought I may have left it too long run out and so took the car to a specialist who then couldn't get the key to 'communicate' with the sensor. sorry, I should have included that info first. i will get the new key checked though. thanks.

Update 2:

Martin, Your advice has made it clear to me that I'm emotionally attached to my car. I got quite upset at the thought of my car not being worth the trouble!! I kept saying "63,000 mile cars are not past it". How sad of me. Anyway, I think we,ve found a fix to try this evening. So fingers crossed it works. i will update when we've (my husband) hve tried.

You don't need to take remote anywhere to get it tested. If you have a camera phone point it at the eye of the remote while you push the button on the remote. If the remote is working then on your phone's screen you should be seeing a steady pulsing blue light coming out of the eye of the remote.

From the sounds of it though, this could be more ecu related because I think the ecu is not allowing the code to be read by the sensor from the remote. I had a similar thing on a Renault Megane Scenic but that was much worse as it meant the immobiliser would stay on. To be honest with you a 1998 Fiesta has done it's day so don't be chucking good money after bad. If you can lock it on the key and you have no immobiliser fault, then don't worry. Beware because there are lots of experts out there who will charge you a hefty fee but not fix the problem but still stand there scratching their head leaving you with the same problem you started with

First of all, verify the remote is good by going to a local autozone or advance auto parts and they have a remote tester on the counter. If it does not work, try a new battery first.
