Need to access computer through bootable OS disc; which one should I use?

Niece's WINDOWS 7 DESKTOP computer has virus.

Black screen + "BOOTMGR is missing. Pres ctrl-alt-del to restart".

This also occurs when trying to boot into Safe Mode.

Ctrl-alt-del does not restart comp.

~ We have no OS disc. ~

Can I just use a boot disc, get in there and run Malwarebytes?

I've seen some kind of Linux disc recommended.

~ Anyone have a boot disc suggestion and a link, please?~

Thank you, in advance!

Update:

Also - if you recommend a Linux disc- can you recommend one for non-Linux users? LOL

DSL (damn small linux) is the one that you can use, you need to download a iso burner so you can burn it to a disc and boot off of it.

if your having a black screen after windows loading screen, wait about 10-15 minutes, leave it on that screen, it can sometimes be caused by windows updates, it usually passes and doesn't happen on the next restart.

if that doesn't work, keep pressing the F8 key on startup, select 'last known configuration that worked' and see if that boots up.

if you get the 'bootmgr is missing' on the first screen you see press the DEL key, or indicated key, it will say on the first screen 'press ... to enter setup/bios' press that. in the bios (a blue menu screen) go through the sections and find 'boot order/sequence' or something simular, change the 1st option to the HDD and second to the DVD drive (you will need to change this to first DVD drive and second HDD if you intend to boot off of a disc ) save and exit, and it should boot off the HDD and into windows.

disconnect any USB drives/phones/mp3 players etc from the laptop/computer before booting.

    DSL is outdated.

IF the bootmgr is missing, you have a bad/failing drive or something is seriously messed up.

"Can I just use a boot disc, get in there and run Malwarebytes?" No

Knoppix or systemRescueCD should get you to the point where you can backup data, and then you may have to run a factory restore.

There are a few disks based on Windows PE, that may let you get enough working to boot into safe mode.
