I'm confused about word processing?

I am looking for a new job and several potential employers have asked for my CV to be in an extension .doc format. I have Windows XP (antique I know), my CV has a.wps extension.(Done by Microsoft Works) What I am asking is, what Word processing program do I need in order to get a .doc extension and can I get it as a free download that works!

    You need Microsoft Word - even quite an old version will be fine.
