Will my cat turn depressed?

I have 2 cats. One is 4 years old and another is 17 years old. My family is thinking that my 17 year old cat is going to pass away soon:(.. my cats are very close and they love eachother so im wondering if my 17 year old cat dies then will my 4 year old cat become depressed and act out differently? should I adopt another cat when my 17 year old cat passes so that my 4 year old won't get lonely?

Personally I do think that cats miss each other when one passes. I had a sibling pair where the female passed at about age 16 and the male two years later. She was ill suddenly and acting very strange and I knew he noticed that, then she was gone. The male did miss her, looked for her, was needier for a while. You cant do much about it, just love on the remaining kitty and make her feel safe and loved. Time deals with the rest.

The decision to adopt a new one differs in every situation. I didnt adopt another because my older male went blind right after his sister passed and somehow I just didnt feel right bringing a new kitten in when he couldnt see. After he passed *I* was too sad to replace him for a year.

If you are going to adopt another, I would give it at least a week or two, to let kitty get her bearings again. A new kitty too soon just risks upheaving her again in short order. Unless you are burning for a new kitty, just take it slow, when it's a good time, you will feel it.

Adopting another would be fine, but cats dont have human emotions
