From birth the baby will be developing their back and neck muscles, which in time and with help from their carer, the baby will learn how to sit unsupported at around 4-8 months. To help the baby learn how to sit up the carer should sit them up using cushions and put the baby’s legs in a ‘v-shape’ in order for the baby to be able to balance themselves. The head is the first thing the baby will develop their neck muscles to lift and they do this at around 1 month.

My son is 5 and a half month and manages to sit unattended if i place him on his bum with his legs in a v shape. After about 5 minutes he gets tired and starts to slump to the side.

They will start sitting up on their own when they are ready every baby is different it important to not hold him up once your child does because those baby muscles need to developed.
