Digital Tachograph issue?

A friend of mine was telling me about an issue he had this week with the Digital Tachograph (DT) in the lorry he was driving. I said I would ask the question on this forum for him. If I get this inaccurate or leave info out, I'm sorry, I only had his quick note to go on !...

- Been happening previous 4 duties, the duties are 3.5 hours driving, then a break, then 3.5 hours driving. Then end of shift. Each shift is a 1930 start and about 0530 finish...

- When he starts the duty for the day (about 1930) and sets off, after 45 minutes the DT warns him a break is due in 15 minutes time (at the 4 hour 15 mins point, 15 mins before the maximum allowed 4.5 hours before a break must be taken).

- But this is just 45 driving minutes into the duty. It seems the DT is not recognising the end of the previous shift and is adding the time on from the previous shift as though it is the same shift. This makes sense because the previous shift driving time ended on 3.5 hours, meaning that a warning after a further 45 minutes to take a break in 15 minutes time ties in.

- But of course, this should not be happening, why is this happening ?

If you need more info, it will probably have to wait until I see him again...

Update:

Perc - I passed on the details you gave and it was the 'rest' symbol. He just phoned me having finished today's (or rather, last night's) duty...went without this issue. So I guess it is sorted now. He passes his thanks, as do I.

The other 'answer' ? You should try acting...

It sounds like he's using a type 2 tacho. Is the truck new (12 plate or later) or has it just had a replacement machine fitted?

He can tell if it's a type 2 when he inserts his card a figure '1' will appear before his name.

He MUST make a manual entry when he insets his card and the bottom line is the one he can alter. There must be at least a 9 hour difference between top and bottom line and the symbol showing must be either 'bed' or '?'

His employer has a duty of care to make sure he's trained on these 'new' machines

Hi Like all de vices this needs to be serviced and calibrated every so often. if this is not done yes it starts doing some strange things. as it should be re-calibrated every so often if not he can be fined for not having it re-calibrated.

so time to get it done tell him if the police stop him the recalibration date is stamped into the device so they know when it was last done.
