A question for you technical guys on microwave ovens?
it says remove all protective packaging now inside to the right is a piece of what appears to be silver coated cardboard covering an aperture it is oblong and is just slotted in it's quite thin is this protection or part of the machine I cannot see the point of such a flimsy working part in the cooking area would appreciate a civil reply

It's probably covering the holes where the microwaves enter the cooking chamber of the oven itself. There must always be some sort of aperture or the radiation cannot get in through the earthed steel casing of the cooking chamber.

Yes, it covers the area were the magnetron is mounted and introduces microwave energy into the oven. It's made of mica, a thin but durable material that is also transparent to microwaves. It prevents splattered food and other contaminants from getting onto the magnetron antenna. Best to keep it clean since heavy deposits can affect the oven's performance.
