where is the best place for a holiday in japan for manga/anime lovers?

i was looking to book a holiday for next year for me and my partner and although i want to experience the more historical japan like visiting temples and shrines and going to a natural hot spring and, obviously, staying in a ryokan (yukata at the ready <3), my partner is more into the idea of going somewhere thats more like a 24 hour comic con. i do love this idea myself so we want to go somewhere where that has both, history and modern entertainment. im not hot on kyoto as it would be REALLY expensive and was originally thinking of kyoto, osaka but they don't have ANY ryokans in any pat of osaka anymore so that was a no go =/

any suggestions?

Akihabara district in Tokyo. It's a shopping district with dozens of stores selling anime, manga, video games and collectibles. Very "otaku cultured" area. There's also small retailers that sell old items that are rare, out of print, etc. so it's a treasure trove. I've gone into a shop that has several floors of merchandise to explore with a bunch of anime characters plastered all over the walls. There's anime exhibits, a Gundam cafe, maid and butler cafes, and comic cafes with internet access to read and watch DVDs.
