    Because he is the weakest member of traffic.

    A car can kill a pedestrian, and a pedestrian can't kill a car driver.

    Then, surely, you should pay more attention to the safety of a pedestrian.

    It makes people walk (for almost everybody, exercise is good) rather than a lazier mode of locomotion.

    Its about having the right of way.

    because it existed way before cars, bikes, carriages etc. we need to pay respect to our oldest form of transport and our ancestors who walked before us.
