He was infected and turned into a cocoon state. Chief then forced his hand into keys head to get the neural implant(chip) and then took off with and keys body woulda been disintegrated by the explosion of the Halo ring.

They captured him and infested his body so that it can reproduce more flood. Master Chief killed him or something, idk. I haven't played halo 1 in a long time and this is all from memory. But I remember master chief saw him and he was infested with the flood.
