my mum is in her late 50's and two weeks ago woke up one morning with an awful pain in her back as though she had pulled a muscle. but claims she did not pull a muscle that she knows of. for the last 10days she says shes feeling so tired everyday and keeps falling asleep... and still her back is not getting any better. i need to call up the doctors in the morning to get her an app as shes at work and cant call.... im worried its something awful, are these signs of cancer?

I am over 50 and had the same problem and doctor told me it was sciatica, heat pads ease the pain and pain killers so stop worrying about mum - we get these aches and pains when we get older, Good Luck

Those symptoms are not definite signs of cancer, although I have to tell you I had an Aunty who experienced these exact symptoms for about a week and was eventually diagnosed with a cancer.

But what I'm saying is, this could be something much less, pain in the back can appear after years of bad posture (example, sitting in front of a computer for hours on end - day after day) and it can also be alot of other random causes which you shouldn't worry about because it will heal eventually.

You really should take her to see a doctor though, but at this stage I wouldn't get worked up because I have even had severe back pains and I found it was due to being hit in the back by a door very long ago and the injury only started to show itself after a few months.

Try to talk to her alot and do things to make her happy, that's what someone needs at times like this.

  • Slow down Nikki!!! She could have easily pulled a muscle in her sleep, have slept funny or a million and one other reasons for the pain in her back. As for being tired again, so many reasons low iron, cold coming on not to mention being in her 50s and a hard working mum. Try not to panic xx

It's better to have her checked by medical experts but basing it on the cardinal signs of cancer, back pain is not one of them. Here are the major signs of cancer:

C - Change in bowel or bladder habits

    A - A sore that doesn’t heal

U - Unusual bleeding or discharge

T - Thickening or lump in breast or any part of the body

I - Indigestion or dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)

O - Obvious change in wart or mole

N - Nagging cough or hoarseness of voice

    U - Unexplained anemia

    S - Sudden weight loss

    Cancer where?

She can't be that bad if she is at work

A diagnosis needs a lot more than pain in her back and tiredness

that could be lots of things, even the flu

No. Let the doctor do the diagnosis.
