dog was eating a poisoned dead rat....?

we have rats under our house.... we had an exterminator out and he put poison into the tunnel they had made going from the garden to under our house. he said keeps pets and children away from this... i have a chihuahua who is not at all interested in anything that is going on with these rats... but my partners mums dog lives here now and hes a parsons jack russell and hes very interested in it all... hes the reason we found out we had them by him sniffing around and crying, trying to dig up the floors in the house. so anyways the man said watch out because the rats will come out and die.... so pick any dead rats up before the dog gets them. i hadnt noticed any dead rats but the dog seamed to have found one... id let him out and i noticed he was eating something. i ran over and it was a dead rat. i did get it off him before he ate it.... but my question is..... what do i do now? will he be ok?

Get him STRAIGHT to your vet. If he's eaten any of this poisoned rat, he's in serious trouble. Rat poison makes the animal 'bleed out' - it thins the blood. And the same could happen to this dog. Let your vet know exactly what poison was used. But don't delay - the dog needs treating NOW.

And the area the rats are in, and being treated has to be strictly off-limits, regardless of whether your own dog is 'interested' or not.

Since the guy warned you about it, the poison didn't stop with the rat. Ingesting the dead rat will expose the dog to the same blood thinning poison that killed the rat. To be safe, you need to go to the vet for charcoal, possibly Vitamin K treatment.

You call the vet when i had treatment put down by Rent a kill for Rats and mice i was told very clearly if my dogs ever got hold of a dead rat or mouse call your vet straight away .

Luckily none of mine did but you must call your vet.

Stop letting the dogs out in the garden, the garden is now off limits for your lazy option than to take the dogs out for a proper walk.

Get checked out by the vet, STOP being lazy and walk the dogs the garden is off limits.

If he has not eaten any of the rat then he should be ok.

Just keep an eye on him for any signs of any change in his behaviour or him vomiting etc. If in any doubt ring your vet for advice.

You see the vet as an emergency before you also have a posioned dead dog!

you've asked this before. And yes it is your fault. you knew there was rat poison around your house, instead of asking here AGAIN, take him to the vets, if you really cared and think he might be infected by it you would take him straight, it's common sense. DUH.
