Which one of the following sentences is correct? Or both correct?

1. Tom and Alice met on the job.

2. Tom and Alice have met on the job.

If either of both of them are incorrect, I would appreciate your explaining the reasons therefor.

There is a slight variance in meaning between

They met, They have met, and They had met.

All are grammatically correct, and all are pretty much interchangeable.
