What is the difference between the following sentences?

There was a tree.

There used to be a tree.

    Both are the same. Only that "was" is replaced with "used to be". But they have the same meaning.

    Both may be used equally, but there used to be a tree is a little more casual.

    the difference between them is that they a both in different tenses

    because its saying there was one

    whereas there used to be one
