Unfreezing or shutting down a frozen laptop?

My Dell Vostro 1710 laptop, running Windows XP, sometimes freezes up, especially (I think) when I've been using voice recognition along with other demanding programs.

a) Why does this happen and (b) more important, how do I shut it down, short of physically disconnecting from mains power and partly removing the battery?

It should frozen because of virus only otherwise too much of stuff in your laptop....

1 .Set the laptop on a hard surface in a cool area for 30 minutes to see if the laptop unfreezes.

    2. press the power button until it closes then leave it for 30-45 minutes to cool the drives.

    3. Remove the power cord from laptop then Tilt the computer on its side and press the battery release buttons.Remove the battery pack from under the computer. Wait for a minute so the computer fully dumps its temporary memory.

    4. Replace the battery in the same way that it came out of the bottom of the laptop. Hook the power cord back up and restart the computer. The laptop should boot up like normal.

    5. Run the antivirus program on the computer to see if the freezing was caused by malicious software. Remove any found virus, adware and malware programs.
