Car problems when cold?

Hi,

I have a 1993 Kia Pride 1.1, and when cold the car is a pain. I'll start it up from cold, the choke will come on as normal. Then once choke goes off, the car will go to die (I'll have to step on the acceleration a little otherwise it does die). Then sometimes when I do go to step on the accelerator to keep it running, it like misses then comes back to life. Also when the car is cold and doing this, if I put my foot slowly down on the accelerator pedal, when it gets to about 1/4 of the way it misses and goes to cut out, if I carry on again it will come back to life. The problem is that when I try to drive away when the car is cold, or when the choke has gone off, the car kangeroo's like mad for a few minutes and it's somewhat annoying. The idle is also real lumpy when cold, it's not level and keeps dipping etc. Still the same when idle is turned up aswell. I understand that the car is old, but I dont think this is normal right?

When the car warms up properly, it's fine. However, the idle is still lumpy and still remains un-level. This is what lead me to think that it could be an intake leak causing the problem, what do you think?

I've cleaned the plugs, ran through some fuel treatment additive and changed the fuel filter - No changes, still have this problem. Any help please? Thank You.

Update:

Hi, thanks for the answers so far! I forgot to say, it only has 31k miles on which is pretty low for a car of its age. It was owned by an elderly women since new.

Your coil, ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor, AIT (Air Intake Temperature) sensor need to look at. The differ temperature between the ECT and IAT should not be more than 2 degrees differ (Indicates on the scan tool). HTH

Edit: Forget to tell you, check for gaskets leaking on the carburetor (CD5) and try to clean up the butterflies (Both plates) first.

Comes from the far east so I usually check the HT system first.

any doubt and I renew cap/arm and leads, they're only intended to have 5 year life span.

once they're above doubt then look for intake leaks, then it's time for the auto choke fast idle adjustment check/adjust.

    Hi Dan

small car engines are great when a car is new with no wear. however over time and mileage things become worn not just the engine but devices like automatic chokes on the engine management system. so combined with it's age and mileage it really is something of a miracle this now 21 year old car is still in use.

Check that the air intake for the air filter etc have no leaks or cracks or have come loose. Most cars have an air flow meter, so if this is nor correct it dies this. Just look carefully at all hoses and connections, must be correct. Or any wires disconnected.
