Along with all other pieces of music, this piece is not a level. The way you play it is the level.
For all exams and levels the way you play the music is ALWAYS the level not the written music itself. The music doesn't have a level, but your playing does.
Some music is used to test how well people play it. How well someone plays it is the level not the music.
Is there anyone who still does not understand this?

Yesterday, I did a clinic for students who are preparing their flute solo for NYSSMA. Yes - we ALL understand that it is the PLAYER who is adjudicated, not the work - but the student and their teacher must choose a work at a certain LEVEL from the Manual, to perform with all the technique and musicianship expected at that LEVEL to receive a score that reflects their abilities. The word "level" was used throughout the entire session, and NOBODY misunderstood - not the teacher, not the students. NOBODY thinks - least if all me, who is an adjudicator (just not in the area I live/teach) that anyone can just pick up a copy of the Prokofiev flute sonata, a Level 6 work (according to the Manual lists) and then slop thru it it horrendous fashion, not know the scales expected at the level of assessment, and not navigate the sight-reading - and then call themselves a Level 6 player.
You made your point. And those of us who are teachers/adjudicators and even the STUDENTS, have to be able to communicate efficiently - so "What level solo are you playing this year?" works fine. Again - we are talking about students who are in the educational system, either receiving instruction in schools, and/or from private teachers. The self-taught, learning form YouTube, no-guidance-from-ANY-teacher wannabees are the sources of confusion - and since they are that far out of the loop, let them stay there until they figure out that a TEACHER will sort it out for them - and that their PopCrap is just plain beneath the standards that we consider worthy of an adjudication festival - sorry, but true. A kid who is adept at gambling or 3-card Monte is not going to pass the Regents Exams in Math, either, unless he has legitimate math instruction - and not from a poker player or faro dealer, but a real teacher. We get it - they eventually WILL get it - but as my late Dad used to say "You can lead a horse to water - just remember what a wet horse smells like . . "
