My dog is eating sticks?? What is up with that?

He is a lab / tic hound mix?? and is about 8 weeks old, we just got him last Tuesday. He is really good otherwise and has bones and a rope toy and we play with him alot but when we go outside and he is done with his business he will plunk down and chew and eat small sticks, I mean he is ingesting them. We have started his shot series and he got the flea / tick stuff so all is good that way. Does he have some sort of deficiency that would not be normally detected. Have had other dogs and they never ate sticks. Is it because of his breed. Really confused.

    Hi,

He is probably just getting used to using his teeth and trying to strengthen them; but you also said that he is ingesting them, so that is a problem. If it doesn't stop, it's a good idea to bring him to a vet. Hope this helped! :)

If there is nothing else to chew on a dog can chew on a stick, tree limb, bush.......

My 8 yr old Dal brags branches close to the house to chew on & she will completely de limb it & there will be nothing but a long pole when she is through. Some of the are pretty good sized but if she can drag it she will .

Puppies will chew on anything. Letting them chew on sticks really isn't a good idea, though. Pieces can get caught in their throats, it can make them sick and vomit (happened to my pup), and a big enough piece could possibly cause an obstruction. Best to take the sticks away and distract him with something else when you can.

Probably teething, I wouldn't worry aboot it unless it starts choking on it.
