How to cut cove molding with a 20 or 30 degree angle for a Bay Window?
Hi, well I got some cove molding and need to cut it for a 20 or 30 degree cut to match the bay window- which has a 20 or 30 degree angle around. I cut some molding and it looks awesome with a 20 degree cut but I can't seem to get the same fine cut on the cove molding. Can you help me? If you get the best answer, I'll give you 20 points for best answer if that is possible? Thanks in advance. It is going in the dinning room so my mom can feel its a nicer dinning room than it is currently.

If you are cutting a weird angle, it is often nearly impossible to get a good mitre cut/correct angle. In these circumstances, professional carpenters use an alternate method as follows: Run one side of the molding as a butt against the opposing wall. Then take a coping saw and cut the other piece of molding to follow all of the nooks and curves of the first piece, and then butt this artfully sculpted butt joint up against the first piece. With some skill, you can make it look better than even a good mitre joint.
Good luck.

my best guess is you are putting it in the miter saw wrong, the part that goes against the ceiling would actually be flipped over and go on the base of the saw, the part that goes against the wall would be against the fence
this is the same with crown molding and btw, coped joints work best when they are 90 degree inside corners, its very difficult to cut back coped joints for the angles you're working on, I wouldn't even try

Hey Sciencenut, that sounds like a good idea, will wait for other answers before making yours best answer.

electric saw or hand cut miter box ?? what are you using ?? find one piece that works as you like and keep repeating that same cut ... the width of the saw blade will mess-you-up if you are not very careful to that detail ......
