You may get a clearer answer if you ask the question the other way round - why has American English changed from the original English? British English is based on a mix of Latin, Saxon, Viking, and Old French. It evolved and is used by many countries around the world that once formed part of the British Empire (eg India, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa etc).
