How do body builders trim off body fat prior to competition?

I am following a muscle gaining program at the moment. I seem to be making small gains thanks to following a better diet plan. But, hard as I try, I cant avoid gaining a small spare tyre of fat around my midriff, which is hiding any abdominal development that I might achieve. By cutting down on my carbs, I can lose the excess fat, but that leads to a catch 22 situation whereby I lose strength and endurance in my muscles, do to the lower glycogen levels, which prevents me from being able to train heavy to maintain what little muscle mass I may have gained. So how do the top body builders do it? I believe its called cutting up. How do they lose the fat without losing muscle mass?

You need to do your research. Yahoo Answers is not the place to ask if you are serious. There are entire guids devoted to this type of thing on bodybuilding.com.

You are clearly uninformed. What you say is not even true. Training heavy doesn't even use glycogen for the first few reps. So if you wantd to train heavy, do triples, doubles, or singles, with high intensity and you won't even use glycgen but you would spare all your muscle on a cut.

I'm sorry but I can't lay it all out for you here, go read the dozens of guides on the internet if you really want to learn. Obviously you are doing it wrong.

And the answer is not drugs. The pros use drugs to help but they still have to follow the rules. Natural guys don't use drugs and still get ripped to shreds.

What pros do really doesn't apply to the rest of us. I don't think pro bodybuilders ever let themselves get a spare tire. And non-competitors have not reason to cut below 10% body fat. If you have a spare tire you need to look into a weight loss program before you worry about building muscle.

    * A weight loss program should involve weight lifting. You just don't need to go to the extreme measures that pro bodybuilders use that are only possible because they are on steroids.
