Is it possible to make a homemade water pump?

    It depends, naturally, on the tools and materials available and on your constructional skills, but in principle yes, it is possible. I would use one of the classic designs, resembling a bicycle pump, with a vertical pipe standing with its lower end in the water. A rod is placed to slide up and down the centre of the tube. At the lower end of the rod is a disc matching the internal diameter of the pipe. The disc is stiff metal or plastic but is perforated by on or more holes over which strips of flexible material (rubber, plastic or fabric) are placed to make one-way valves. When you push the rod down, the valves open and let water through. When you pull the rod up the valves close and a quantity of water is brought up with the rod. The water then spills through a side hole in the top of your pipe and you have pumped your first volume of water.

    Now all you need do is devise a lever system so that you have a pump handle which works to drive the rod up and down.

    Make a motor and use it to transfer water from low potential energy to high potential energy and cause a continuous flow. Making a motor involves a running circuit and two magnets to create a torque on the circuit which will cause it to rotate and this can be used to cause a flow of water.

    You can find several versions of this idea for a pump on line. Some use PVC pipe.
