If someone was looking for a music teacher what would you advise?

If someone was looking for a musical instrument teacher in the UK would you advise them to go to someone whose only music qualifications were grades or diplomas?

I agree, younger - more impressionable, they need to know what they're doing and have qualifications.

Older - grades or qualifications could be good but I don't think they're necessary.

What instrument is it you're after? I know a great piano teacher!

Beginners are the most impressionable, and need to learn good habits form the first minute. ONLY a highly-qualified teacher ( which for band and orchestra instruments usually means DEGREED) will do. Recreational instruments are often taught be people with more experience than they have education 0- but NEVER EVER have one child teach another, even if one is in high school and the other in elementary - it will NOT end well, no matter how much the student likes the cool HS kid.

Source(s): Over thirty years in professional full-time music education - and an adjudicator who has seen and heard a fair shore of home-made, self-taught, INCORRECTLY taught hot messes. One Mom, when I suggested that her daughter seek better instruction, told me that the kid was learning (not enough, I said) from a HS *tennis star* - the girl was "locally famous" for tennis, so could teach Anybody to do ANYTHING. Yeah . . .

No, because I value music education and know how important it is for teachers to be qualified. There are parents around who know nothing about music, don't care, and just want cheap lessons for their kids.

It doesn't matter in which country you live. Aspiring musicians should look for a fully qualified teacher with good music degree and a degree in pedagogy (teaching) from a recognised university or conservatoire.

    Grades and diplomas aren't enough.

If I was a beginner with that instrument, then yes. I were an advanced musician, then probably not.
