Motorcycle problem: cause and solutions?

Update:

Riding my '99 Fazer home, the oil light came on. I thought, no problem, I'll top iy up when I get home. However, a little later when I went to pull the clutch in, there was no resistance at all. It spings back slowly but I have no clutch. Investigation has resulted oin the bike leaked all it's gear box oil out. I made it home, luckily I didn't have to stop for any red lights or at any roundabouts, which would have stalled it when i went to pull away. The engine runs but it's got no oil.

Problem and cause - you thought that the light was for oil level when it is for oil pressure.

When the oil pressure light comes on at any time whilst and engine is running that engine needs to be stopped and not run until the cause is found and rectified to avoid advanced engine wear/damage.

The clutch is a wt multiplte type that needs to run in oil to work and be at the correct temperature - it now needs replacing if the rest of the engine is in a state that makes it worth the repair

You don't mention what model of Fazer you have but the FZS600, for example, does not have gear box oil (separate from the engine oil) most (all?) modern Japanese 4 stroke bikes combine transmission and engine oil.

When properly filled they contain 2.7 litres of oil, if that came out in one go then you were lucky you did not coat the back tyre.
