What I take in my carry-on is anything I would need to get through the flight and another day and night, in case my checked luggage doesn't arrive when I do. The extra day gives me time for the airline to find my luggage, or for me to buy what I will need if the luggage doesn't show up.
Change of socks and underwear, maybe a shirt, toiletries, names and phone numbers of where I'm going, copy of my itinerary, ID, a book or two, earplugs, cell phone and charger for it, pen and paper, light raincoat unless it's winter where I came from and where I'm going, cardigan to use for wearing or as a pillow on the plane. Anything else you can fit in is optional.
