How long does it take to get braces put on?

I'm getting braces October 12 and I was wondering how long it would take to get them on. Also what are the steps? I'm nervous about the cheek retractor I feel like the fact I can't close my mouth will give me anxiety. Also what color?? Thanks!

If you already saw the orthodontist and they aren't requiring you to have anything extra done first and you mean actually getting them put on, it will take anywhere from probably an hour to two hours, the things they do to prepare your mouth and teeth for braces (they have different things they do in different cases) can take up to weeks or months. These could be spacers, extractions, or appliances. spacers may only take a few days or up to 2 weeks, extractions could take a few weeks to heal, and appliances can take months to prep your mouth for braces. The process of getting them put on is they will place in the cheek retractors, put a substance on your teeth that will smooth them out, wash and dry your teeth, put on a glue that they can harden the brackets to, place the brackets, put wire through the brackets, and then put in extra do dads like appliances, hooks, bite turbos, or appliances to help your treatment along with braces, give you instructions on dos and donts and what the next 2 weeks will be like and let you go. Essentially, avoid all chewing for the first week, and ease into it the second week, your teeth will be really sensitive making chewing a painful struggle at first, but by week three it should almost get to where you can eat almost anything within reason if you are careful.

First, you have to remember that every patient & every office is different. Also, there are several different kinds of braces. But I'll try and give you some answers.

To get the braces on your back teeth, you may need separators, little metal clips or tiny rubber bands that are placed between your back teeth, for 5-7 days.

They will probably fit bands, or rings, around your back teeth. They may have to try on several different sizes before they find the exact fit. They glue the bands on with special dental glue. On your front and side teeth they will glue tiny little brackets. NONE of this should hurt, but you may feel some pressure. There will be some time where you won't be able to close your mouth -- your teeth need to be kept dry for the glue work properly and for the brackets to stick to your teeth.

Then the wires go on. They will probably start with very light, thin wires. They are held on to the brackets with tiny elastic "ties". The have just about every color you can imagine, so pick whatever you like. You will get new colors at each appointment.

They should also tell you if they want you to stay away from any specific food, and they will show you how to brush and floss.

Putting braces on can take anywhere from 30 - 90 minutes.

You may have something different than what I've described. I don't know what your teeth look like and exactly what your orthodontist has planned for you.
