PC problems?

Basically got my PC and bits out of storage after 3 years. All the bits seem to be okay. Had to change the wireless mouse and keyboard because the receiver had bent and broken, but it won't boot from the HDD at all and in the BIOS or boot menu it won't even list it. I opened it up, checked for dust, loose connections and I changed the CMOS battery just on principle. Do I need a new HDD?

As it's not showing up in the BIOS you have two possibilities. Either the hard drive is screwed or a component on the motherboard is fried. Updating the BIOS will not help because if it worked before it should work now. Don't throw money at it because you will never stop

I borrowed an old HDD drive from my dad...failed to get the old one out (stripped the thread on one of the screws I think) but put the replacement in one of the spare bays, plugged it in and it booted up straight away. At least I know the board is good despite being an old socket 7 with liquid cooling (in a case from 2006).

Yes! Great deductive reasoning. " in the BIOS or boot menu it won't even list it" tells you that the HDD is no longer functioning.
