Toilet clog+overflow help?!?

So here's the problem, my toilet keeps overflowing when I flush it and then stops, only to then slowly drain, but not flush anything away. The toilet paper has sat in there for about two days, and has become almost sludge. How do I fix this??? I've thought about plunging the mess. Should I turn off the water before the nest flush?I'm really disparate please give me any advice.

Put on rubber gloves and remove everything solid from the bowl into a garbage bag. Fill a bucket with cold water and pour that into the bowl. Immediately start plunging. If the water disappears then you should be OK. Pour another bucket of water into the bowl just to make sure.

If the standing water doesn't not go away after you have used the plunger or if the problem reappears intermittently, then you need to call a professional.
