I have a problem understanding ISO files.?

From what I've read, an ISO file is a complete copy of a disc. If you are having computer problems, and you use the media creation tool to create an ISO file, what exactly gets copied onto the file and where do the file contents come from? If its from your existing hard drive, WHICH MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT, eg corrupted files, undetected viruses, missing .dll etc, surely, all you are doing when you create the file is copying the problem as well.

you cannot do what you list by "copying" (ie cure drive problems)

you MUST create an "image" of the drive . This dont "copy" files- it creates an exact copy of all the sectors on the drive

When you repair the drive the same software used to create the image is used to put those sectors back on the drive

    ok so

    1. an ISO file is just a CONTAINER file. meaning it can store anything and functions like a zip or 7z file

    2. you can RIP a disk to ISO and then use that in a virtual CD drive program to make it look like you have a DVD disk installed

    3. when you just create an ISO file nothing gets transferred to it unless you manually put the files in the ISO

    4. Its very rare to use and ISO for a hard drive. normally virtual hard drive images are in vhd or a similar file format.
