It`s often said that the "German Shepherd Dog" is a "Jack of all trades" Master of none.

Having owned this breed for 56 years I can confirm that, as my dogs could any job you asked of them although maybe not as well as a breed especially bred to do an "individual" job.

GSD`s can swim, track, search, hunt, retrieve, guard, do agility, pull sleds,

protect, herd, detect drugs etc......you name it. A good GSD can do it.

Ultimately a dog is going to be what you train it to be. I would suggest getting a young puppy and if you want a good family dog that is considered a velcro dog get a Vizsla. They are all of the above of the things you listed. My Vizlsa is a very active pup but he's good with kids and will snuggle with you or sit with you on the couch sometimes he thinks he is a lap dog lol. They are medium sized dogs get to be about 2-2 1/2 feet tall. He is a natural hunter I only had to teach him the basics of obedience and they will do anything you ask of them. If that isn't something you want in a dog I would get a lab or a German Short hair pointer etc..

Most retrievers are great for hunting, enjoy the water and make good pets. They are not typically protective however, and while they will bark, they are likely to let an intruder walk off with the TV and even with the kids. You need to prioritize because all breeds were developed for specific purposes. Even those developed for multiple utilitarian purposes such as German Shepherds and American Eskimo Dogs will still be far better at some things than others.
