Provided you & those around you stay sober, it's as safe as any other Latin American city. The biggest threats involve alcohol: drunk drivers, drunk walking, drunk swimming, drunk falling off of balconies, fighting or rape while one/both parties are drunk.

Don't believe everything people tell you. I lived there for quite a number of years and had absolutely no problem. Inturn I would have to ask you. Is New York, London, Toronto safe? Anything can happen anywhere. Fear has never made me not travel and never will. I never stuck to a resort, then I might just as well go to the U.S. or any Caribbean Island. When I travel I mingle with the locals and learn about their daily lives, education, traditions, culture and have learned various languages. That is the adventure not sit at a 5 star resort!

Despite recent violence in Cancun, officials say tourist zone is safe for vacationers. After Mexican officials discovered eight bodies in Cancun last week, the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory to the country. However, security experts and tourism officials say the area remains safe for foreign visitors

If you mean visiting the city of Cancun, I would say stick to the tourist areas. Not a place I would visit at night either. We did that once, only because we had Mexican friends with us, and were going to a restaurant.

If you are going to stay at a resort hotel in the Cancun hotel zone, then that area is fairly safe, and has plenty of activity, plus party atmosphere.

We have vacationed in the Mayan Riviera each year for the last several years. We take excursions and tours out of the resorts, and generally had a great time while on our vacation. We always book our outings with the resort excursion desk. That way we feel we are not going to be taken advantage of. We have never felt threatened by the locals. Most times found them to be very helpful. Like anywhere you go, don't flash your money around. Don't wear fancy cloths, and jewelry when out on tours. Never leave anything of value unattended, it will be gone when you get back to retrieve it.

Yes, just stay in the resort if you are worried. The cartels kill Mexicans, not tourists.

    Bad for business.

Yes, aside from the cartel sex trafficking and illegal organ harvesting. Have fun!
