Should I take out my rubber bands for my braces when I'm eating?

My orthodontist told me to take out my rubber bands when I eat, but is that a crucial thing or no? Sometimes if I'm eating a quick snack, I'll leave my rubber bands in cause I'm not eating a full meal. Is it gonna mess up my braces or teeth if I eat with my rubber bands in? Or does it not matter?

If you're able to eat with them in, it's fine. Some set-ups won't let you open wide enough, or chew normally.
