I have a little decorative vase that means a lot to me.
It's a long story........but when I first moved to Italy.....there was a little old ancient widow here, that NO ONE seemed to ever talk to. She avoided everyone and no one seemed to like her.
Apparenty some ancient feud going back god knows how long.
well, one day, at mass , there was a sudden unexpected downpour.....and I knew she had to walk home. My house was right outside the Church.......so I ran home and grabbed and umbrella and ran back and gave it to her.
She just looked at me, like I had lobsters coming out of my ears.............
like why on earth was I giving her MY umbrella. ? But then she realized, I was just trying to gallant and all that...........and she took it......and hobbled off up the goat path to her house.
The next day, I saw her.....and she waved me over......and she insisted I take this little gift for my kindness.
and she gave me this little hand Painted decorative vase. It was like the first friend I made here........ and when people saw her talking to me............their jaws DROPPED-
Apparently she hadn't spoken to ANYONE in DECADES. They couldn't BELIEVE , she was talking to ME of all people.......the American outsider.
After that........she was like my best friend........and kept referring to me as her new "boyfriend".
she was really sweet......and nice........and I couldn't believe that she never spoke to anyone.
I ended up doing some yard work for her....and she loved having me around........Always giving me stuff from her garden.
So the vase means a lot to me.......and if I ever move again.......the vase is definitely coming with me.
