With a relative so ill i would not take her out of the country at the moment, you would not get any health insurance for her.

Odds are heavily against your mother contracting coronavirus, so go on your trip. However, take extra safeguards such as the mask and avoiding touching things at the airports and on the plane, as much as possible.

The safest option is NOT to travel.

But you’re worried that your mum might fall ill, when the bigger risk is that your mother may cause others to fall ill if they catch her active chest infection whilst sharing an aeroplane cabin with her.

With your mum’s existing chronic problems it’s questionable whether she’s safe to fly in a pressurised cabin to begin with. But add her chest infection and it’s really silly.

You already know that the Covid-19 coronavirus can kill, and probably know that it’s those with existing serious health problems who are at the highest risk of that.

Add to that the fact that if you disclosed all your mum’s present health problems to a travel insurer, you’d find it exceptionally hard to get her insured at any price. If you didn’t tell the insurer then they simply won’t cover her and will declare the policy void  if they later find out. Relying solely on an EHIC for any treatment she may need from the Spanish Health Service would be exceptionally foolish.

So even without the coronavirus, I strongly suggest that your mother is totally unfit to travel. But with the coronavirus, it’s a total no-brainer decision.

I would think it is a serious risk for your mother, given her condition. It is the elderly and those with health problems that mainly represent the  corona virus fatality figures. Travelling on planes and getting through crowded airports increases the risk of encountering an affected person. Spain has 25 confirmed cases.

That is a question you should ask your mother's doctor. I don't know why an elderly woman with chronic health issues plus an active chest infection would think she should fly anywhere -- regardless of the the coronavirus.

The reality is that if you mother is exposed to any disease she'll likely to be infected become serious ill.

The elderly and sick people are at the highest risk and it sounds like your mother hits both issues.

If you’re going to be in a confined space with strangers (plane, train, bus) I personally wouldn’t take the risk.

Especially if you’re headed to a zone where there are active cases.

    It’s scary.
