Life In The UK Right Now?
Hi, I'm wanting to move back to the UK and wondering if this is possible or advisable right now. I'm being forced to sell my house in New Zealand and to be honest it's the last straw for me and this country, have been wanting out for a while.
I'm a British Citizen and would have enough money to buy a house but am wondering about border restrictions, covid cases and unemployment? I don't want to live off my savings.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
I would be moving to Harrogate/Ripon.
Thanx for your answers, they are very helpful.

It’s a little bit shite about to get a little bit shiter. There are 3 tiers of COVID restrictions coming into force depending on the area.

A friend of ours who did this found that the difference in the type of property he could buy for his money, was more than he expected. He is dead now, but I am not sure he made the right decision in returning to the UK after so long.

With covid as it is it is far better to remain where you are for the time being ( if your visa allows that) if not then you need to start applying for jobs in and around the area you would like to live in and looking at rental house prices, minimum rental contract is 6 months but that woud enable you to look for a property to purchase, view them and decide..... you will not be entitled to UK resources being a British citizen or not, so no benefits like unemployment so you would be supporting yourself, so getting a job is a priority along with somewhere to live

If you're in New Zealand - that's by far the safest and best place to be now.
If you return to the UK, you may need to quarantine. You'll need a job to rent a property; there is (perhaps obviously) high unemployment right now.

Harrogate is a very expensive area. Look on Rightmove UK for prices. Unemployment is going to get very much worse here. Over a 1000 applied for an Admin job in one area. It will depend on your skills, our life is restricted and will be for some time. We have to wear masks in the shops and many of our leisure activities are restricted. Life is far from normal.

Like everywhere, unemployment is going up at the moment.Recently over 1000 people applied for a job in Manchester.
Whether you will find work, depends on what your skills are and what is available. To get an idea, have a look at one of the many job sites

Latest covid information on the government website. There are travel corridors - one place on the list is New Zealand. However, should your flight stop on the way at an unlisted country, on arrival in the UK, you will have to self-isolate for 14 days at your own expense.

All this could change in the coming weeks and months. I wouldn't advise you to stay where you are, nor come back here - the decision is yours. A friend emigrated to Australia this month and has made sure there are enough savings to tide them over for a few months until they find work.
