What do cats eat catnip?

Does it help them cure diseases? Do they just like the taste? 

I am asking this since I had one cat who usually enjoyed eating catnip. Then one night she felt ill. I gave it food, milk, and catnip, but it seemed to lose its appetite. I immediately went to the vet, but unfortunately, it was too late.May I know why my cat didn't eat catnip? Please no rude answers.

    Cats eat catnip because they like the effects it gives them, the same reason people drink alcohol or do drugs.  They like the effects.  

    I'm sorry about your cat, she did not eat catnip because she was too sick to want to eat any.
